John Hutton
John Hutton was born on May 31 1963 and was educated at Trevallyn Primary School and Riverside High School. After finishing High School he went to Launceston TAFE College to study an advanced certificate in Mechanical Engineering Drafting for one year. He was then apprenticed to Tamar Steel Boats in 1981 and qualified as a fitter and machinist in 1985. During the last year of his apprenticeship he went to night school and did the post trade certificate in diesel servicing, qualifying in April 1986. On completing his apprenticeship he started work at Glasgow Engineering as a fitter and machinist. On June 28 1989 he took over the position as diesel mechanic which he held for five years. During his time as diesel mechanic, he received training in servicing Gardner engines from John Heady, who was head fault finder of Gardner’s work shop in the U.K. this training was undertaken at Hawker Siddeleys' head office in Queensland, they were the Australian importer for Gardner engines at the time. On February 25 1994 he took over as foreman of the machine shop after the retirement of Frank Watton. On April 27 1994 he completed the Advanced Certificate in Mechanical Engineering Drafting, finishing his studies at night school. In 1996 he took over as Sales Manager, until 1999 when the position changed to General Manager on the retirement of his father. John was also a keen yachtsman and, like his father and grandfather, has been a member of the Tamar Yacht Club. He has competed in six Sydney to Hobart Yacht Races and numerous other ocean yacht races to Queensland and Hamilton Island. On December 13 2003 he married Melinda Kirkpatrick they have had two daughters, Charlotte and Isabella. John is the fourth generation of the Hutton family to be involved in the running of Glasgow Engineering
